Using a toner after a shave serves multiple purposes, but primarily, it is used to tighten the skin and remove any residue left behind after shaving. When you shave, it's common for small amounts of shaving cream, hair clippings, or dirt to be left on the skin. A toner helps to cleanse the skin by removing these residues, providing a fresh finish.

Additionally, toners often contain astringent ingredients that can help minimize the appearance of pores and tighten the skin. This tightening effect can be particularly beneficial after shaving, as the skin can be sensitive and may experience some degree of irritation. Furthermore, toners often include soothing ingredients that can help calm the skin post-shave, reducing the risk of redness or irritation.

The other options listed don’t align as closely with the primary functions of a toner in a post-shave routine. Fragrance could be a characteristic of some toners, but it does not capture the main purpose. Enhancing color is more relevant in the context of hair coloring or make-up and does not apply to skin toners. Promoting hair growth is not a function of toners; rather, it's typically associated with specialized hair care products or treatments aimed at stimulating hair follicles.
